Thirsty Thursday: Carmenere, Lapostolle, Casa Grand Selection, Rapel Valley, Chile, 2011

This Thirsty Thursday travels to South America (figuratively) while keeping a firm toe in France.

Back in 1994 Alexandra Marnier Lapostolle started buying vineyards in Chile. She could thanks to her middle name, Marnier. Yes, that Grand Marnier. Being the great granddaughter of the world’s most famed liquor helped, but Alexandra had greater ambitions. Continue reading

Dijon: Cremant de Bourgogne

No more messing around.  No more obscure regions like Bugey or Jura as posted last Monday.  It’s high time this EU Austerity Drinking Tour got serious.  It’s time for Burgundy, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay. Before leaving Lyon and the Rhône … Continue reading

Drinking in Lyon: Bugey Pinot Noir and Jura Chardonnay

This Monday finds us 126 days deep into our EU Austerity Drinking Tour: our post-WSET Advanced attempt to (cheaply) drink our way through Europe’s great vineyards, breweries and distilleries.

Last Monday’s post visited Lyon’s Roman ruins, a Crozes-Hermitage under $10, and big, pretty churches. Today, we wake to omelets and cappuccino in our home stay. Highs and low punctuate the experience. We nearly miss our train because Avignon has not one station, but two. Yet we catch the last bus to the TGV speed train. It flies up the gorgeous Rhône Valley like a whisp of a cloud on the wind.

The vineyards of Cornas and Crozes-Hermitage sprawl everywhere. In little time our train deposits us in Lyon. The city is an urban sprawl. It renders Avignon quaint, parochial. Children beg and grope as we swap to the Metro. However, our Lyon apartment is spacious and the kitchen wonderful. We try to go out. Then it pours. Continue reading

Thirsty Thursday: Château de Rochemorin, Pessac-Léognan, Bordeaux, France 2006

This Thirsty Thursday uncorks an accident. I had ordered Château de Rochemorin’s 2006 Red full of excitement. Baron de Montesquieu -inspiration to America’s Constitution- lived and made wine here in Pessac-Léognan (a Graves sub-region that weaves into Bordeaux’s suburbs).

2006 was a challenging year for reds, leading to powerful, cellar-needy, tannic, austere wines. The problem? This 2006 is white. Continue reading
