Paso Robles 5: Austin Hope Treana Tasting Cellars
Wayward Wine continues its exploration of Paso Robles wineries. One day starts in search of wine for a wedding. An up-scaled, wood-planked warehouse sits between biotech buildings and similar sheds. Inside, large indigo walls fly up two stories, splattered with animal heads and art. Lipstick red metal chairs frame the reclaimed wood bar and tables. House-sized curved wood panels mimic sliced barrels dividing the space. This is not a winery, it is a tasting lounge for the hip. Welcome to Austin Hope’s Treana Tasting Cellars. Continue reading

Paso Robels 2: Tablas Creek Vineyard Review

Damp in Lyon: Crozes-Hermitage, Roman Theaters, Basilica, Cathredral and a Big Clock
25 Days into our EU Austerity Drinking Tour, we leave Avignon reinvigorated for Lyon (see last Monday’s EUADT post).
Highs and low punctuate the experience. We nearly miss our train because Avignon has not one station, but two. Yet we catch the last bus to the TGV speed train. It flies up the gorgeous Rhône Valley like a whisp of a cloud on the wind.
The vineyards of Cornas and Crozes-Hermitage sprawl everywhere. In little time our train deposits us in Lyon. The city is an urban sprawl. It renders Avignon quaint, parochial. Children beg and grope as we swap to the Metro. However, our Lyon apartment is spacious and the kitchen wonderful. We try to go out. Then it pours. Continue reading

Temples, Towers, Beaujolais? And Duché D’Uzes a New AOC: Nîmes, France (P2)
Part 2, Day 121, continues our visit to Nîmes: birthplace of denim (get it, de Nîmes). After last post’s Roman arenas and temples, we hike to the park. Amidst Fall’s colors, fountains, and walkways rests the Temple to Diana:
The ruin still feels lifted, intricate, delicate: much like the following wine. Although this is Southern France, it is November, and we buy the one wine that matters: Beaujolais Nouveau.
