Here reside my bottle breakdowns. These reviews provide information about each wine’s context: history, geography, value, etc., and composition: from appearance and aromas, to sweetness, acidity, tannin, body, length, flavors and quality within its type. Each review features a chart where I rank the wine’s qualities (e.g. light, medium, or full bodied) according to the Wine and Spirit Education Trust’s tasting guide. These are snapshots of a wine and reviewer. Don’t be surprised if the wine and your perception of it change. Use this data to buy and taste wine with purpose.

Stop worrying if a wine is bad or good. Judgment only describes the judge. Instead, treat each wine, each bottle, even each sip as a meeting unique unto itself. Find new wines here to stretch your mind and palate.

Open bottle. Open mind.

BREWDOG ALCOHOL RISEN: Review: Imperial Red Wheat: EU Austerity Drinking Tour #19

After weeks of Scottish beer and Whisky, I wanted wine.  I wanted its complexity, richness, and…er, alcohol.  Brewdog’s first bar in Aberdeen provided the alternative. Each day’s castle/distillery/museum visit had wiped us.  We needed beer stimulation. So every evening we … Continue reading

BREWDOG UNHOPPED UPMANSHIP: Flying Dog Zero IBU IPA International Arms Race: EU Austerity Drinking Tour #18

We returned to Edinburgh’s BrewDog bar to taste something new: unhopped IPA. A few weeks ago we tried a bottle of BrewDog’s Punk IPA.  It tasted too pretty to be punk.  But its aromatics and herbaceous bitterness, like all IPAs, … Continue reading

BREWDOG IN EDINBURGH: Beer Review: Alice Porter; Dogma; Libertine Black Ale: EU Austerity Drinking Tour #17

Last week we tried Brewdog Brewery’s lighter, bottled beers.  They ranked well but did not lead to their self-proclaimed beer-volution.  Time to get serious.  This week, we tackle BrewDog’s bar in Edinburgh. To start the day, my wife and I … Continue reading

BREWDOG BOTTLES REVIEW: 77 Lager; Trashy Blond; 5 A.M. Saint; Punk IPA: EU Austerity Drinking Tour #16

It all began with a dead squirrel. In 2010, I stumbled onto a BBC article.  It highlighted controversy spinning around 55% alcohol, £500 beers from BrewDog brewery.  They called them “The End of History”: a squirrel pelt sheathed each bottle … Continue reading

PUTTING THE THE IN THE MACALLAN 10 YEAR: EU Austerity Drinking Tour #15

Weeks into our Scotland travels, we needed a break from Scottish beer.  As with Aberlour’s 10 Year Whisky (reviewed earlier), a grocery sale inspired us to buy the last bottle of The Macallan, 10 Year Old, Single Malt Whisky. Why … Continue reading
