A Study of Scarlet: A Red Wine “Conundrum” #MWWC6
Of all our adventures together, I hesitated to publish this for fear of disclosing information dire to national security and international trade. However, upon hearing that the serial publication, Monthly Wine Writing Challenge (#MWWC6), had chosen “Mystery” for its 6th topic, I could not resist. The following is an account of one of Sherlock Holmes’ greatest discoveries.
We arrived at the crime scene before Scotland Yard.
My associate opened the door and we walked into a cavernous space. It was brightly lit, like a stage at London’s Palace Theater. But instead of costumed-actors, brightly colored isles spanned for a seeming eternity. Innumerable produce and products of manufacture filled its shelves. It reminded me of a Sunday market or bazaar but entirely under one roof.
I expected him to jump into action, as was his habit. Instead, arms folded, only his eyes studied the room as we walked.
“The telegram explicitly stated it would be here”, he murmured impatiently.
“What would be here?” Continue reading

PIG’S NOSE, BLENDED SCOTCH WHISKY, AGED 5 YEARS, SCOTLAND
We hit Scotland last August. It nearly halted our seven month, thirteen country, EU Austerity Drinking Tour. We so fell in love with its people, countryside, and Whisky that we nearly stayed. We imagined ourselves William Wallace, Robbie Burns, Mary Queen of Scots, or that princess from Brave, with every castle tour, every distillery visit, and every haggis eaten.
But back in the United States, nostalgia ate us. Local distilleries proffered harsh, young spirit: too hot and tight to be enjoyed alone.
But then we found a bottle of Pig’s Nose, Blended Scotch Whisky, Aged 5 Years, from Scotland for under $30. Continue reading
ENTRÉE PARIS 5: Maison Rouge’s CO HO LA and Jacky Blot’s Brut Tradition: EU Austerity Drinking Tour #44
This Monday’s EU Austerity Drinking Adventure (day 80) finds us winding up our last days in Paris.
We revisit Montmarte and its Sacre Coeur to find both changed. Today, the sun’s glare brings out tourists and pick pockets. Inside, a moment of song and ritual seems lovely, but crowded.
Tumbling down Montmarte towards the city center we halt at Le Repaire de Bacchus: a wine-geek oasis in this urban desert. Continue reading

Entrée Paris 3: Père Lachaise Cemetery and Domaine de Rotisson, “Les Dalines”, Pinot Noir, Burgundy 2010: EU Austerity Drinking Tour #42
Day 76 of our EU Austerity Drinking Tour. We have to slow down. Versailles had exhausted us (last week’s post). To avoid (most of the) tourist hordes, we hike to Père Lachaise Cemetery.
Once in this grid of the famous and dead, we unleash our inner Art Historians, and hunt for our heroes of the humanities. Continue reading
